There are several different types of headphones available today, which makes it very difficult to decide which headphones to choose. The choice may come down to whether you want in-ear, on-ear or over the ear type headphones and how much comfort you want to have. Some headphones are certainly more comfortable than others.

Over Ear

If you go with over the ear headphones then you want to make sure that you have soft ear pads and a nice comfortable, adjustable head band. You can choose leather for durability but the ear pads may not be as comfortable so there may be a bit of a trade-off between comfort and durability. Over the ear headphones tend to be most comfortable and should also have good noise cancelling ability. If you prefer in-ear headphones or so-called ear buds, then there are factors to consider as well.

In Ear

For in-ear headphones, the lightweight types such as V-MODA ForzaMetallo may be the way to go. If you want a good seal and if you want to reduce some of the noise, then you should select the Sennheiser Momentum. However, how much of a seal you want is really a case of personal choice and some people may prefer a looser fit. Ear tip size can be important when looking at the tips and do not forget that there are different shapes available to choose from. Most people may just buy the generic shape, but you may want to experiment with bullet shape or other shapes. Some of the most comfortable ear buds includes the Bose QuietComfort 20 Acoustic Noise Cancelling Headphones with a cone shape for comfort and the Apple Airpods Wireless Bluetooth Headset which is wireless for maximal convenience.

The Differences

On-year versus over the ear headphones differ in that the over the ear headphones cover the entire ear while on-ear headphones do not. There are advantages to both types and it will come down to your personal preference. On-ear does allow for some air flow and they are smaller, lighter and thus easier to carry around. However, they do not cancel out noise as well as over the ear headphones do. Over the ear headphones often feel more comfortable and seal out noise well because they cover the entire ear.

The Best Headphones

One of the most comfortable headphones is the Bose QuietComfort 35 (Series II) Wireless Headphones, Noise Cancelling, which is an over the ear type. Another good type of over the ear headphones is the Sennheiser PXC 550 Wireless Bluetooth Headphones. Both the Bose and Sennheiser have the advantage of being wireless and are comfortable and have good audio quality. If you are someone who prefers on-ear type headphones, then your best choice would be the Plantronics Backbeat Sense Wireless

Bluetooth Headphones with Mic. The Planktronics have excellent audio quality and comfortable memory foam ear pads. They are also wireless headphones which is much more convenient than having wired headphones. The Bose 775347-0010 SoundLink On-Ear Bluetooth Headphones is also an excellent choice for on-ear headphones. Which headphones are best for you is really going to depend on a combination of your budget and preferences.
